Happy halloween everybody. Get out there and try to catch some ghosts! But if you fail, don't despair, there's always plenty of candy around to cheer you up.

Pretty lil' things

Once again science meets art in the realm of little bitty things; it's the Nikon Small World Photomicrography 2007 contest winners. Check out the giant unilamellar and multilamellar vesicles. Put the who in the what now?

Don't conceal your tragic flaw… give the Doctor Rock a call

Dr. Rock, by Ween, live in Chicago. This was orignally a really sludgy lo-fi song from the album The Pod, just Dean and Gene and a drum machine. Very cool to see it as a totally loud, rockin out crowd pleaser.

Nano thoughts: A nitpick and a gush

Apple's third generation iPod Nano is a wonderful little music and video player. One thing bugs me. Look how the text is cut off on the 'now playing' screen:

There's really no reason that the song and album names need to be truncated like that; there's plenty of room to let the text flow to another line.

Obviously it's not a fatal flaw, just irritating.

The video playback on this device is amazing, smooth as silk and surprisingly watchable for such a small screen. In fact it's very forgiving for videos downloaded from YouTube — it helps hide the artifacts of low resolution encoding. (Hint to Mac users: step 1, step 2.)

It happies me.

Short Movie: Evil Bee

It's nice to see high quality computer animation like this that isn't packed full of saccharine, like movies from Pixar or Dreamworks. No nutrasweet here, just thick globs of regurgitated honey. It's Evil Bee, by PF Flyers.

Art... In... Spaaaaace!

Here's another beautiful image. It's a Hubble view of the Great Nebula in Carina. 6500 - 10000 light years from Earth, this composite image is 50 light years across and contains at least a dozen stars that are 50 to 100 times the size of our sun.

More info at Wikipedia, of course.
