Roundtable: Are we just out of ideas, or what?

It's thursday, time for the blogger's Roundtable. This week i'm yr host.

Think back over the last century. Each decade has such iconic imagery and sound attatched to it. The roaring '20s, the depressing '30s, the war years of the '40s, the suburban paradises of the '50s, etc. Each 10 years seems like a different world from the 10 that preceded it.

So what does this decade, the '00s have going for it? I think we've run out of ideas. It's like the 90's have just been extended for another decade. The music, clothes, movies, everything pop culture is nearly the same. Obviously we've had some major events but the overall feel is really '90s. I guess with some reality TV and iPods thrown in, and the grinding war on terror.

Maybe we've just reached a comfy cultural spot. Or maybe we're so surrounded by constant individualized entertainment that our creative cells are all asleep. Are we all just too busy blogging?

Comment away. (Anyone can leave a comment. Let us know if you would like to be a permanant member.)

Visualizations

Chris Jordan creates very large images which display a certain quantity of an item.

This is a detail of Shipping Containers, a 6 x 10 foot digital artwork which "depicts 75,000 shipping containers, the number of containers processed through American ports every day." See the full image and others here.

Fun with paint

A blank wall and lots of paint... Wetpaint is an online art toy. The brushes are great. The spraypaint is nice and drippy. The roller sucks!

Above the Air

This image from the edge of the atmosphere makes a great desktop. More info here.

"Atmospheric gases scatter blue wavelengths of visible light more than other wavelengths, giving the Earth’s visible edge a blue halo. At higher and higher altitudes, the atmosphere becomes so thin that it essentially ceases to exist. Gradually, the atmospheric halo fades into the blackness of space. This astronaut photograph captured on July 20, 2006, shows a nearly translucent moon emerging from behind the halo.
