Soviet Bus Stops

There's something both eerie and whimsical about these bus stops from the former Soviet Union. Dreamlike. Desolate.

"One would think that the Soviets would have come up with one universal design for this community structure – simple, functional and cheap to mass produce. However, in many instances this was not the case, much time, effort and imagination went into many roadside bus stops. The sky was the limit with different shapes and design– blocks, domes, columns, towers, A-frames and archways, even ones shaped like birds, yurts and hats."

Mechanical Painting

Hey look... paintings by a robot!
But are the strokes and colors programmed, or chosen randomly?
In the end it's the aesthetics of the smooth brush strokes that make the paintings intriguing.

13 photos that changed the world.

Neatorama has a great feature on thirteen iconic photographs, including the Hindenberg, Omaha Beach, the famous V-J kiss in Times Square. You've seen these all before, but there is some interesting commentary, and more behind-the-scenes information about the photos and photographers.

Burning Blue

This large beautiful image of the sun looks more like something you'd find in the depths of the ocean.

"Among the first images taken by STEREO’s SECCHI/Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope, the image shows the Sun’s roiling surface and atmosphere at temperatures around one million Kelvin (1.8 million degrees Fahrenheit). The ultraviolet light in this range is not typically visible to the human eye, so it is represented here in blue."
