Vacation in Hell

If you ever visit Singapore, make sure to check out the 10 Courts of Hell at Haw Par Villa. Bring the family and see the eternal punishments of hell in bright, vivid life-size scenes!

More info here and here.

This page has a handy cheat sheet to help you figure out what level of hell you are going to wind up in.

Looks like I'll be on the ninth level, I painted nudes in art school. (Ninth level of Hell: Writing or painting erotic literature or scenes: Flattened between two planks, have your head crushed in an iron ring, skull steamed, bones scraped and tendons pulled out.)

Mystery Item Thing Number 3

What do you think this is? Click the image for a closer view.

This time I'm not going to give the answer until tomorrow, then I will post it in the comments.

(I think this one is going to be pretty obvious, but maybe only to certain people.)

World War II Printing Industry Ads

Gene Gable at creativepro.com has put up some scans of World War II-era advertisements for the printing industry. Great stuff. I don't agree with many of his conclusions but the imagery is definitely worth checking out.

Gene Gable has dozens of articles posted here and they are all very interesting, even if you are not involved in the printing industry.

The Cat's Adenoids

If you can't think of any good compliments, it turns out that you can combine any animal with any noun for an acceptable flattering phrase.

"...just about any combination of an animal, fish, or fowl with a part of the body or article of clothing that was inappropriate for it: the bee's knees, the snake's hips, the clam's garter, the eel's ankle, the elephant's instep, the tiger's spots, the leopard's stripes, the sardine's whiskers, the pig's wings." Other sources list "the kipper's knickers, the duck's quack, the gnat's elbow, the elephant's (fallen) arches, the bullfrog's beard, the canary's tusks, the cuckoo's chin, the butterfly's book, the caterpillar's kimono, the turtle's neck."

More info here.

Maurice Weseen's Dictionary of American Slang lists more "cat" variants: "the cat's eyebrow, ankle, adenoids, tonsils, galoshes, cufflinks, roller skates, and cradle."

Great Paintings by Jacek Yerka

Go check out these fun surreal paintings by Jacek Yerka.

The Holden Crater

Explore Mars' Holden Crater here.
These are some of the most garish colors I've seen in a satellite image... it looks like Rainbow Brite vomited all over the place.
Actually the colors do have meaning:

"In the image, areas with high abundances of
rocks and hardened deposits show up in reddish
tints, while areas covered with sand, loose dirt,
and fine dust appear in blue colors. Areas with a
mixture of these extremes display yellows and greens."

3-D Images in the Air

Welcome to the future. Using laser-produced plasma, Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) is "the first to succeed in displaying real 3D images in a space where there is nothing but air."
Good work guys!

Supersonic Storybook

Urge Overkill's Supersonic Storybook is a brilliant rock and roll album that you probably don't own. But you should! Go check it out on iTunes.

Jack Black had a song from this album on his iTunes playlist so you know it's gotta be good. He's got a Ween song on there too.

The Best Photo I've Taken.

I don't know why I like this photo so much. It looks like a still from some non-existent apocalyptic film.
A storm rolled through about five minutes after I took this photo.

The Professor and the Grinch

ungeni.us has posted another funny tale of customer service gone wrong.

I had to explain how batteries work,
and how batteries must be recharged.
This concept was, somehow, completely foreign to her.

"Wha.. you mean I have to plug this in occasionally?
That totally defeats the purpose of getting a laptop!"

From part 3 of a series. Parts one and two are here and here.

Captured Lightning Sculptures

These lightning sculptures are created by bombarding chunks of acrylic plastic with electrons. Then, the electrons are allowed to escape (takes about 20 nanoseconds!), leaving fractal-like patterns burned into the acrylic.

There's a lot more info including animations and 3D Quicktime movies here, and you can buy the sculptures here.

Leaked Image of OSX on a Bagel: Fake!

CARS posted an image today of what appears to be a version of Mac OSX 10.5, code-named Leopard Mobile, running on a bagel with cream cheese.

From the article:
According to sources, “Leopard Mobile” will run on:
        A Motorola Razr.
        A PSP.
        A Space: 1999 comlock.
        A bagel with cream cheese.

The more I look at the the image provided, the more I'm sure that it is a fake! I mean, I can't even a see an Apple logo on that bagel anywhere, although I suppose it could be on the back. Also notice that there is no visible glare on the screen, while the cream cheese (thermal paste?) looks shiny and delicious.

A Free Ween Song For You

Thanks for stopping by, everybody. Here's a little treat just for you.
This is a live version of Ween's "A Tear For Eddie" that will melt your brain into a warm pile of goo.

I got this song from weenftp.org a while ago, but it looks like that site is down now. I don't know the date or the venue.

Die Lollipops

I don't know how my daughter stumbled onto this, she likes to type random words into the iTunes Music Store search. Die Lollipops are a German kids music group. We have no idea what they're singing about but these are actually some pretty good pop songs!
If you have kids I bet they will like this.

You can buy their music on iTunes: click here.

Website Flags at Google Blogoscoped

Philipp Lenssen made up a bunch of flags to represent areas of control of different websites. This one is for "Diggaria."

"Digg.com’s superior flag harvests the smart mob,
with every user independently controlling a small
     square of the overall design."

Funny stuff.
