Another volcano seen from space
Volcanoes from space are just an awesome sight.
I can't upload images for some reason. Stupid internets. Click the link to get the visuals.

Aqua Blue Red Sea
This beautiful photo of Saudia Arabia's coral reefs, taken from space, shows a wide variety of water depths, ranging from light turquoise to midnight blue. More info here, and check out the high resolution image.

Ooh; aah
It's not a nuclear mushroom cloud, so go ahead and ooh and aah. This is a photo of the exhaust column of the Space Shuttle Endeavor.Labels: photography, space

Moons in Order
Here's all the moons in our solar system all lined up in order of size, with Earth in the background for a size comparison.

Art... In... Spaaaaace!
Here's another beautiful image. It's a Hubble view of the Great Nebula in Carina. 6500 - 10000 light years from Earth, this composite image is 50 light years across and contains at least a dozen stars that are 50 to 100 times the size of our sun.
More info at Wikipedia, of course.

Southern Lights
A light show over Antarctica makes for a great image.
"The ring of light that the solar storm generated over Antarctica glows green in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum, shown in this image. The IMAGE observations of the aurora are overlaid onto NASA’s satellite-based Blue Marble image. From the Earth’s surface, the ring would appear as a curtain of light shimmering across the night sky."

Squishy Earth
Did the Earth have to be round? What if it was all flattened out like a pancake, or if all the heavy mass was on one side — would it warp out like an egg?
These hypothetical Earths are ridiculous, and the font choice doesn't help.

Above the Air
This image from the edge of the atmosphere makes a great desktop. More info here.
"Atmospheric gases scatter blue wavelengths of visible light more than other wavelengths, giving the Earth’s visible edge a blue halo. At higher and higher altitudes, the atmosphere becomes so thin that it essentially ceases to exist. Gradually, the atmospheric halo fades into the blackness of space. This astronaut photograph captured on July 20, 2006, shows a nearly translucent moon emerging from behind the halo.Labels: space
