Less Tacky Fractals

Somewhere along the line fractals got lumped in with potheads, tie dye and the Grateful Dead, but some of these entries to the 2007 Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Contest are unique and aesthetically pleasing.

These are nice:

Playground by Klaus-Peter Kubik (pictured to the right)
Past Present Future by Joseph Priestly
The Draftsman by Paul DeCelle

Educational Charts from the '50s.

There's something surreal and wonderful about these educational posters from Germany that were produced in the 1950s and '60s. Click here to see a gallery of some of the most interesting ones. Reproductions of these posters are available for sale on eBay, here.

Pretty lil' things

Once again science meets art in the realm of little bitty things; it's the Nikon Small World Photomicrography 2007 contest winners. Check out the giant unilamellar and multilamellar vesicles. Put the who in the what now?

Art... In... Spaaaaace!

Here's another beautiful image. It's a Hubble view of the Great Nebula in Carina. 6500 - 10000 light years from Earth, this composite image is 50 light years across and contains at least a dozen stars that are 50 to 100 times the size of our sun.

More info at Wikipedia, of course.

Grey Abstraction

Here's a great abstract artwork.... mostly pufferfish and coffee beans. OK, actually it's a high resolution scan of pollen.

15 Eyesight Myths.

Can you read the text on the right? Don't squint. And don't get your eyes too close to the computer.

Deep down you probably knew these myths about your eyesight weren't true, but it's good to hear it from the experts!

Evolution of Evolution

From blublu, a giant mural picturing evolution from cell to dinosaur, to man and beyond. I like how the bronotsaurus' head goes over the wall to the overpass above. Cool!

More great stuff here.
