It seems to be some sort o' crystal growing on a line. How's that for vague?

ok, one hint. it's something covering something. you've probably seen it many times before...
Hairspray or gel on a strand of hair?
I just can't figure out what would leave that sort of crystal structure and I refuse to google it.
Any more guesses? ...Anyone?
