I guess it's a natural formation of rocks in some geologically exotic locale.

A rock quarry. Similar to ones that cut granite into slabs for use in counter-tops.

close up of some sort of mineral. Can't say what for sure but it looks like the microscopic crystalline structures of minerals like quartz, etc.

it's seems to be a basalt collumn formation not unlike Irelands Giant's causeway

I too say Giant's Causeway, late, but only because I can add that the Matthew Barney experimental movie, Cremaster 3 (or maybe 5) opens with weird action occurring on said Causeway
